E-SURFMAR Programme Phase 2007-2011

Revision of the design study

The following time table is proposed for the revision of the E-SURFMAR design study:

SVP-B Iridium

  • E-SURFMAR impact study commissioned with ECMWF and NCEP from October 2006 to September 2007 (possible funding from the EUCOS studies programme);
  • E-SURFMAR Programme Manager to produce a revised design based on operational experience and results of the E-SURFMAR impact study (October 2007 to March 2008);
  • Review and acceptance of the revised design study by EUCOS-AG (April 2008);
  • Review and acceptance of the revised design study by E-SAT (May 2008);
  • Review and acceptance of the revised design study by PB-Obs (June 2008);
  • Approval of the revised design study by the EUMETNET Council (Autumn 2008);
  • New network design implemented in 2009-11.

This revision will be strongly dependent on the availability of results from the impact study.

Possible trends for the period 2009-2011

The following activities are considered as being important elements for the 2009-2011 period:

  • Complete the introduction of the full E-SURFMAR design to 125% of the threshold level as agreed by the EUMETNET Council and PB-OBS subject to a review of the design in 2007-2008;
  • Continuation of the reducing of communication costs for VOS and data buoys as and when the technology will permit.
  • Completion of operational deployment of spectral wave and 10-minutes wind measurements on the 4 moored buoys and a move to 100% compensation for their operation.
